The Los Alcázares city council asks the Regional Assembly to reconsider its decision to annul the chair to give the Mar Menor its own legal personality (01/12/2020)

| The mayor of Los Alcázares will request a meeting with the political groups in the Assembly to convey the importance of the continuation of this work at the University of Murcia | Mario Cervera, mayor of Los Alcázares, will ask the Regional Assembly for an urgent meeting together with the rest of the political parties that make up it (VOX, Ciudadanos and Partido Popular) in order to ask them to reconsider the decision announced in the yesterday, to withdraw the financing of the chair of the University of Murcia of "Human Rights and Rights of Nature", which at the moment, was immersed in working on the provision of Legal Personality of the Laguna del Mar Menor. Los Alcázares City Council has been one of the main promoters of this legislative initiative, taking it as a Municipal Motion to Plenary, where it was approved by an absolute majority.

In addition, later, it has been the City Councils of other riverside towns such as San Javier and San Pedro who, with their support, have also joined it. Cervera highlighted the serious damage that the withdrawal of funding would cause for the achievement of this project, recalling that "it is an initiative that arises from the social clamor for the state of almost terminal degradation of the Mar Menor lagoon, and that Therefore, it does not understand political colors or party discipline, but the whole of Murcian society is fighting and rowing in the same direction.

" In this sense, it has announced that "if the decision not to continue subsidizing this chair by the Regional Assembly, the Los Alcázares City Council would be willing to assume the sponsorship of it so that it can continue" For his part, the Councilor for the Environment, Antonio López Campoy explained that "as first-hand connoisseurs of an environmental problem such as the Mar Menor, we are going to continue betting on a chair, that of the rights of nature, which not only seek to solve the problem here, but rather focus on similar problems in the rest of Europe.

" It should be remembered that the Los Alcázares City Council is currently working on collecting the 500,000 signatures that it must present in Congress during the next nine months 9 months.

In this sense, as of next week, those neighbors who so wish may approach the City Council and sign in support of this Popular Legislative Initiative and, in turn, the mayor of the town has requested the collaboration of the rest of City Councils of the Region to collaborate as notaries in the collection of signatures in their municipalities.
