The government delegate in Murcia highlights the environmental, social and economic development of the treatment plant in Los Alcazares (17/07/2008)

Before the coming into operation of the new treatment plant in Los Alcazares, the Government Delegate, Rafael González Tovar, said today that "the Government of Spain has consolidated its commitment to zero discharge to the Mar Menor", and that this infrastructure has the capacity to response to population growth that occurs during the summer season in this coastal town.

Tovar Gonzalez recalled that the filter has had a budget of 15.4 million euros and that their operation is ahead of schedule, because although the initial period provided was 30 months, has ensured that the work held in 18 months, with the corresponding period of test, which "has done everything possible to ensure that all citizens and summer vacationers could enjoy the Mar Menor sea in a good condition."

He has also stated that this new treatment plant, operated in evidence at this early stage, and three lines of treatment, will benefit about 120,000 people and have a clearance volume of 22,500 cubic meters daily in high season.

Added to this is that the filter will have tertiary treatment by filtration and ultraviolet rays that allow the water is reused for irrigation.

"Therefore - noted - its impact will be positive at the environmental, sanitation and the impact on improving the quality of the waters of the Mar Menor, but also by social and economic factors, as sectors such as tourism and agriculture will benefit from a large volume of water reuse. "

In this regard, the government delegate stressed that this work is further proof of compliance in the actions designed in the Water Programme of the Ministry of Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs (MARM) in terms of treatment and reuse of resources water.

He also explained that this new plant will be attached to which, through the Ministry of Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs, has built the Government of Spain in the area of Mar Menor, recovering the commitment made in 1995 by the socialist government Felipe Gonzalez with one Sanitation Plan.

"Then - says González Tovar - declared interest of the state to build three sewage treatment plants, one of them, the Cabo de Palos (Zona Sur del Mar Menor), was launched in those years and, after a period break, a few months ago concluded the San Javier and was only now pending started operating in Los Alcazares.
