The purification of Los Alcazares and fully operational (10/02/2011)

Station Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) from Los Alcazares and fully operational after a test period that began in 2008, a year ahead of schedule.

The construction of this sewage treatment plant represents an investment of 21.5 million euros and is vital to curb pollution in the Mar Menor.

The president of the Hydrographic Confederation of Segura (CHS) and the Mayor of Los Alcazares, Encarnación Gil, today visited the facility.

The importance of this treatment plant is that not only allows a suitable treatment for all waste streams generated in the area, but the improvement in the quality of effluent is discharged to the Mar Menor, a lagoon affected by urban development in the region.

The new treatment plant in Los Alcazares is located in the same location as the existing one, which became obsolete and inadequate for the flows that came with it.

The facility occupies an area of approximately 51,300 meters square and has three lines of treatment, suitable for 40,000 people each.

The benefit is equivalent population of 120,000 and the amount of debugging is of 22,500 cubic meters per day, both in high season.

The plant provides tertiary treatment with filtration and ultraviolet rays, with the possibility that the treated water is reused for irrigation.

Recall that the central government's action was included in the agreement signed with the Autonomous Community of Murcia in 1995, who was paralyzed eight years (1996-2004) and is essential, especially when the former treatment plant in Los Alcazares management as developed by the Government of Murcia, takes time to be deficiencies in their operation, being overflowed its treatment capacity.

In any case, the CHS will reaffirm the commitment of the Ministry of Environment and Rural and Marine Environment continue to work for safeguarding the ecological values of the Mar Menor, in collaboration with municipalities and regional government.
