The president of the Community, Fernando López Miras, stressed today that "the Region of Murcia that we build for the future needs the thrust of a motivated, committed, supportive and hard-working society", and gave as an example the volunteers and professionals who lent their help after the floods of Los Alcázares.

The regional chief executive attended the official ceremony of recognition of different groups for the work they performed in December 2016, and which was held in the municipality of Mar Menor.

"An action of recognition and gratitude to those who gave their time, their work and their effort to help the residents of Los Alcázares and to write in capital letters the word 'solidarity'," said López Miras.

"We want to thank these professionals and volunteers for being with the Alcazares who needed it," said the president, who stressed that "these people should be the example and the base of the Region of Murcia of the future we are building" .

During the act of recognition, Lopez Miras delivered to the mayor of Los Alcázares, Anastasio Bastida, a new off-road vehicle that will be incorporated into the municipal Civil Protection service in substitution of another that was unusable after the floods of 2016. The new vehicle, of type 'pick up', will contribute to improve the intervention of the municipal teams in emergency situations and catastrophes.

1,700 professionals from the emergency corps and hundreds of volunteers or professionals from the different administrations worked from the first moment in the municipality so that the affected areas could recover normality as soon as possible.

During the flooding episode in the Mar Menor area, more than 500 rescues were carried out and 2,348 emergencies related to the storm were managed.
