The City Hall of Los Alcázares, yesterday became the venue for the exhibition of the Association of Painters with their Mouths and with their Foot, which for the first time visits the Region of Murcia and in which artists from all over the world participate.
The Association of Painters with Mouth and Foot was created in 1957 when the painter Erich Stegmann and a small group of disabled artists from 8 European countries founded an organization to help each other.
Erich Stegmann, a victim of polio, was deprived of the use of his hands and built a prosperous career as a painter with his mouth in Germany.
The main objective was to commercialize his work reproducing his original pictures in calendars, greeting cards, prints and illustrating books.
The result of this initiative became an exclusive world artistic movement, currently present in 74 countries, with approximately 800 artists.
In Spain it was founded when in 1957 Stegmann came into contact with Manuel Parreño Rivera, who became the first Spanish artist of the Association.
The headquarters is located in Madrid and is responsible for the dissemination and distribution of the works of artists throughout the country.
The objective of the members of the Association is to be able to live off their effort and their work, through the acceptance and recognition of the quality of their works.
Its only source of income is the sale of products (cards, calendars, sheets, books, ...) reproduced from originals painted with the mouth or with the foot.
During the inauguration, the artist from Madrid, Pilar Gancedo, based in Los Alcázares, demonstrated painting with her mouth.
The mayor of Los Alcázares highlighted "the beauty of the exhibition both for the quality of the works and the passion they put into it," he said.
